A Facebook page, an Instagram account, a WhatsApp number: for many entrepreneurs, that's where it all begins. It's free, fast, and your customers are already there. So why bother with a website? The short answer: the two don't do the same job.
What social media does very well
- Building a day-to-day relationship with your customers.
- Showing what's new, behind the scenes, your team.
- Reaching new people with targeted advertising.
- Talking directly, in private messages or on WhatsApp.
Its limits
- You don't own your page: the platform sets the rules, and an account can be blocked or hacked.
- Your posts disappear quickly from the feed; key information (prices, opening hours, services) is hard to find.
- When someone searches for your line of business on Google, a website shows up first — rarely a Facebook page.
- For a large company, a public institution or a client abroad, a website remains a sign of seriousness.
The right combination
Social media grabs attention; your website turns it into trust and quote requests. Your posts point to your website, and your website points to your WhatsApp. Each channel has its role.
When to move to a website?
- Customers keep asking you for the same information (prices, address, services).
- You want to work with companies, institutions or clients outside the country.
- You already invest in advertising and want to convert that traffic better.
- You want to show up on Google when people search for your trade in your city.
If you tick at least two boxes, it's probably time. A well-designed business website is often enough to get started.
